How Collaboration Helps Fight the COVID-19 Pandemic
Thursday, June 25, 2020
Chicago, IL May 18th, 2020 – Today, several thousand Child Protection Investigators and Child Welfare Specialists at the Department of Children and Family Services (“DCFS”) in Illinois received face shields to enhance their protection, as they continue to go out and work with families during the pandemic.
Like many essential workers across the United States, they have had limited access to PPE. Completing their mission of protecting children and families, critical in times like today, has meant putting their own lives, and the lives of their loved ones, at risk. The SOG immediately recognized DCFS essential workers and the critical tasks they perform as they work with families during this pandemic - and wanted to help.
In a time of shortage like today, PPE does not always come from the traditional sources, and it took a collective effort to succeed. Based in Chicago, TURF Design is a leading manufacturer of acoustic felt ceilings; moved by DCFS mission, they ordered materials and worked over-time to produce the necessary face shields and support their community. Similarly, EIS is a national manufacturer of diverse electrical materials, that reconverted to producing PPE during the pandemic. Several individual donors contributed monetary donations that allowed the purchase of the remaining face shields.
‘When we alerted potential donors, they were all moved by DCFS mission and the difficult conditions in which the pandemic has put their teams. It is still hard to believe that we were able to deliver so many face shields, through serendipitous connections between one of the DCFS investigators, a producer of electrical parts-turned PPE producer, and a local entrepreneur wanting to support his community. It shows what the SOG is about – we can achieve great things if we put our resources together”. - Stop COVID 19 Special Operations Group
